Purpose and Overview

The funding from this grant by the Design Initiative at Dartmouth (DIAD) and the Dartmouth Center for Advancement of Learning (DCAL) supports the creation of a new design-based curricular module (activity, exercise, project) inside an existing undergraduate course at Dartmouth.

This grant is intended to foster creative collaboration in the classroom, and to help Dartmouth faculty use design-based methods to enhance student engagement.

The grant consists of a $1,000 stipend, plus up to a $1,500 budget for expenses. DIAD and DCAL will also provide help and coaching as you develop your module.

How does DIAD define “design” for this grant?

We use the term “design” broadly, to describe a creative process of identifying and solving complex, open-ended challenges. While the nuances of the design process may vary widely based on context and discipline, all design-related educational activities supported by this grant must contain the following 3 ingredients:

Needfinding

Conducting primary and secondary research to discover and frame a specific problem or opportunity. Learning about the topic/issue from the perspective of the people involved, and analyzing that research data.

Lateral thinking

Brainstorming a wide variety of potential solution ideas.

Feedback-driven iteration

Working in drafts to produce a final deliverable (which may include physical, digital, and/or experiential artifacts) based on feedback from peers, instructors, and other stakeholders.

Grant Award

Each faculty grant recipient will receive a $1,000 stipend at the end of the term in which they teach the relevant course. In addition, each faculty may request up to $1,500 to cover materials and other costs associated with implementing the new curricular module.

Expectations & Deliverables

DIAD and DCAL seek to build a cohort of faculty implementing design methods in their courses. We ask grant recipients to participate in the following:

Workshop & design consultation Attend a workshop and at least two consultations with faculty/staff design mentor. Start of term / middle of term
Cohort kickoff meeting Participate in the cohort kick-off meeting at the start of the term or earlier if needed. For example, you would attend the Winter term kick off (if possible) even if your planned activity did not occur until Spring term). Start of term (earlier if needed)
Student reflection Participate in having your students complete a survey or attend a focus session about the design thinking component(s) of the course. End of term
Faculty reflection Produce a short written report, reflecting on lessons learned and student outcomes, and include text and images that may be used in a “Previous Grant Recipients” section of a website. End of term
Wrap-up event Attend a wrap-up event at the end of the term or academic year. End of term / academic year

What is DIAD?

The Design Initiative at Dartmouth (DIAD) nourishes cross-campus collaborations at the intersections of design thinking, engineering, and the liberal arts. DIAD is creating new design-based curricular, co-curricular, and scholarship opportunities for Dartmouth students, faculty, and staff, fosters a joy of learning and is grounded in addressing complex social issues.
