About The Course

In this course, students become proficient with the principles and methods of visual analysis of geographic data. Students learn and use geospatial tools for visual communication and visual thinking. The course develops students' proficiency in the principles of cartography and map interpretation and use. Students complete the course with the confidence to discuss (orally and in writing), evaluate, use and critique a wide range of maps and interactive data visualizations. They also finish empowered to design and produce their own visualizations.

The Design Integration

Professor Chipman is using Design Principles to replace an individual based lab and final project components with a design-focused, team learning experience. Students will work in small groups to design interactive web-based maps on a topic or issue of their choice. This project will support students exploring how cartographers present information and how different types of maps serve different purposes and audiences. Students will also learn how to work in small groups to identify a real-world problem, brainstorm ideas for a solution, develop and test prototypes, and refine those solutions in response to feedback to produce the most effective, user-based solution.
